It is the perfect place to relax, reset, and step away from the pace of daily life. A few local essentials will make your stay smoother and more respectful.
Environment
The island community works tirelessly to protect the local environment, and every contribution helps. Weekly beach cleans are organized at different locations and usually last around one hour.
The amount of plastic bottles, straws, cigarette butts, and microplastics collected each week is eye-opening.

Getting Around
One of Gili Trawangan's biggest charms is the absence of motorized transport. Explore the island by bicycle, on foot, or by local horse cart (Cidomo). Horse welfare is taken seriously, and regular free clinics are run for islanders to support the health and wellbeing of the horses.
Other Useful Info
Unlike Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands are predominantly Muslim. Mosques and prayer rooms are part of daily island life, and the call to prayer is heard five times a day, often more during religious festivals. Friday prayers are especially important. Please respect local customs by dressing modestly when walking through villages and near mosques.
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and restaurants, but speed can vary and often depends on weather conditions. You are on a small island in the middle of the ocean, so occasional instability is normal. Local SIM cards are inexpensive and easy to buy in many shops.
There are several ATMs on the island. Many larger restaurants and dive centers accept Visa and Mastercard, but card payments usually include a surcharge of around 3%. Carrying some cash is still recommended.
The three Gili Islands receive power via undersea cables from Lombok. Short outages can happen, especially in high season. Balé Sampan and many other businesses operate backup generators for these situations.
Fresh water comes from desalination, but it is not recommended for drinking. To help protect this fragile environment, please use refill stations whenever possible and reduce single-use plastic by reusing bottles.
There are several 24-hour clinics on the island for minor injuries and common medical issues, and doctors can prescribe some medicines. For serious cases, Siloam Hospital in Mataram is the main referral option and can usually be reached in around 1.5 hours.
